GPRC Takes First Steps to University
The Honourable Marlin Schmidt announced on February 22 that GPRC will begin the process of granting its own degrees. This news was received with a standing ovation from a large crowd of students, staff and faculty and community members. The College will remain a comprehensive community institution that honours Trades, Diplomas and Certificates but will now embark on a new journey meeting the future demands of the region's learners. GPRC Hosts CCAA Women’s Volleyball Nationals
Presented by Morris Financial Group & Manulife, the 2018 CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship brought eight teams from across Canada to Grande Prairie for three full days of national-level volleyball action from March 8-10. The Nationals was an amazing weekend at GPRC, bringing many volleyball fans in to watch the action.
The VIU Mariners ultimately took the crown in the gold medal match against the Douglas Royals.

Fairview Convocation 2018
GPRC celebrated the success of its students at the 2018 Fairview Convocation on March 3. The graduating students of Fairview’s Trades, Agriculture and Environment programs accepted their certificates and enjoyed an afternoon of company and celebration at the President’s Tea.
GPRC will hold its Grande Prairie campus Convocation on May 5, 2018 at noon.

Keith Rowe: Making Connections for Success
Keith Rowe is a GPRC student in Grande Cache. Thanks to a tool available through GPRC’s learning management system, Rowe was able to get the help he needed in his class without leaving his home. This resource allows faculty and staff to log on and share their screens remotely with students in real time as well as being able to videoconference for a face-to-face experience. GPRC Students Present Research on Parliament Hill
On February 12-13, GPRC psychology students Anwar Tuhl and Demica Pusch presented their research project, Mental Health Needs of Adolescents and Available School-Based Resources in a Remote Rural Community, at the College and Institutes Canada (CICan) Student Innovation Showcase in Ottawa. Accompanied by their research mentors, Dr. Connie Korpan and Dr. Michelle Yeung, Pusch and Tuhl presented their work at a poster session during CICan’s two-day symposium on applied research. GPRC Alumna Receives Academic Honour from CPA
GPRC alumna Emily Friesen-Peters has received a Certificate of Academic Excellence from the Canadian Psychological Association for her undergraduate thesis at the University of Alberta. Friesen-Peters’s award-winning psychology thesis examined the effects of what she called “relationship education” and its capacity to change people’s perceptions about their own romantic relationships or those of others. GPRC’s Concert Choir is off to Carnegie Hall
Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) has extended an invitation to GPRC’s Concert Choir to participate in a performance of Handel’s Messiah on the DCINY Concert Series in New York City. This performance in Isaac Stem Auditorium at Carnegie Hall will take place on Sunday, November 25, 2018. This is once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the choir that includes students as well as members of the community.

On March 13, over 165 guests attended the GPRC President’s Award Luncheon. Members of the community were recognized for contributions to excellence in education, and new members of GPRC President’s Council were welcomed and inducted.

Upcoming Shows in The Douglas J. Cardinal Performing Arts Centre
The GPRC Concert Choir will be joining forces with the Fort St. John Community Choir for its Spring Concert performance entitled “Hope Springs Eternal!” The performance on April 7 in the Douglas J. Cardinal Performing Arts Centre will feature the famous “Schubert Mass in G” with string orchestra, as well as some well-known Canadian folk songs and spirituals. Join the Jazz Ensemble on March 26 and the Wind Ensemble on April 9 for their Spring Concerts.

Spring has sprung! If you enjoy gardening and are interested in sustainability, GPRC’s 21st Century Homesteading Conference is for you! On April 5, at GPRC Fairview, guest speakers Wendy Smith from Heritage Farms and Rob Avis of Verge Permaculture will discuss gardening in our Zone 2 climate, as well as selling and marketing principles for Peace Country farmers.
