In this workshop, participants will experience the role and power of music in people’s lives as we sing songs, dance dances, play and listen to music, and become part of communities both local and global.
South African, Afghani, and musics from the South Pacific to the Northwest Territories will serve as points of departure for exploring various strategies to include diverse content and perspectives in an elementary music classroom.
Through our music making, discussion and reflection we will also address issues of representativeness (including language), transmission, cultural context, teacher comfort, culturally responsive pedagogy social justice and fostering intercultural understanding through music.
