Breadcrumb About News New Water and Wastewater Technician Certificate Flows into NWP’s Continuing Education Department Posted 11 September, 2025 NWP News Share File Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) is adding another program to its career-focused continuing education stream thanks to a strong partnership with Aquatera Utilities. Starting in Fall 2025, students with an interest in the control and operation of water resources will be able to complete a 12-month Water and Wastewater Technician certificate locally. “Water management is integral to the maintenance of safe, healthy, and sustainable communities,” says NWP President and CEO, Dr. Vanessa Sheane. “This new program is yet another example of NWP’s commitment to advanced technical education that meets the needs of our region and produces knowledgeable and skilled graduates who can add value.” NWP is working collaboratively with local industry leader, Aquatera Utilities to develop and train Level 1 Water and Wastewater Technicians who will be able to monitor and operate essential water control systems and equipment. This program will support local education efforts to meet the workforce needs of regional employers and open up more exciting career opportunities for the community. “Aquatera is proud to partner with NWP to support local training that creates opportunities close to home,” says Aquatera Utilities CEO, Vaughn Bend. “By developing this program here in our region, we are investing not only in skilled operators, but in the long-term strength and sustainability of our communities.” NWP’s new program will be the second of its kind in Alberta and is a welcome local training solution. Intended for those wanting to break into the field or working professionals, the program can be completed as a year-long certificate or as individual classes for Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits through the Government of Alberta Water and Wastewater Operator Certification Program. The certificate program can be started at any point during the year and does not need to begin with any specific course. Classes include student-paced online learning, in-person hands-on lectures and lab training, or a combination of both. The full certificate includes 600 hours of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) in the water and wastewater industry. “By offering flexible training options and a range of certifications, NWP can provide foundational knowledge to new students, as well as upskilling opportunities for existing technicians who are looking to expand their scope of practice,” says NWP Director of Continuing Education, Cris Seppola. “We are excited to launch this new pathway, and to continue building out other industry-relevant offerings.” Learn more about NWP’s newest Continuing Education program at NWP.me/WaterTech.
