Building Prosperity

Expanding our Reach

To help meet the growing demand for skilled professionals across northern Alberta, Northwestern Polytechnic launched a purposeful expansion of its programs, training capacity, and facilities in 2024.

This ongoing initiative is focused on creating a strong, sustainable talent pipeline that will fuel economic growth, address identified workforce needs, enhance regional competitiveness, and contribute to resilient communities and industries across the North.

With preliminary planning enabled through a $1 million Government of Alberta investment in the 2025–26 budget, the region’s largest post-secondary institution and only polytechnic is ready to take the next step.

Building on this momentum, Northwestern Polytechnic is seeking an additional investment to advance high-priority infrastructure development and deliver innovative, future-focused skills and technology programming on its Grande Prairie campus.

This strategic investment will significantly expand NWP’s capacity to educate and train the workforce of the future while generating long-term economic and social returns for Alberta. The opportunity is particularly timely given the recently announced federal Building Stronger Communities Fund, which creates the potential to leverage matching funding for transformative infrastructure projects.

The Northern Edge Technology Centre

At the heart of this expansion is the proposed Northern Edge Technology Centre. This leading-edge facility has been purposefully designed to strengthen workforce development and drive regional prosperity.

The project will contribute to:

  • Enhanced regional competitiveness
  • Increased labour market capacity
  • Economic diversification and growth
  • Stronger, more connected communities
  • Improved access to workforce-focused education and training

Recognizing the importance of modern, hands-on learning environments, Northwestern Polytechnic plans to deliver a new 59,000 square foot flagship facility by 2028.

Purpose-built to meet evolving industry needs, the Northern Edge Technology Centre will support responsive, applied training across:

  • Allied health and community care
  • Engineering and technology disciplines
  • Skilled trades and apprenticeship education

The development will build upon recent program enhancements and investments while optimizing campus infrastructure and creating capacity for more than 600 additional learners annually. By expanding access to high-demand education and training opportunities, Northwestern Polytechnic will help ensure northern Alberta has the skilled workforce required to support continued growth and prosperity for decades to come.

Together with our local partners and industry champions, we have collaboratively identified emerging needs and formulated a strategic approach that will help address the persistent talent shortages that continue to impede hiring efforts.

Workforce Forward: Impactful Grande Prairie Additions

NWP is growing apprenticeship and trades programs in Grande Prairie to create a centralized training model with modern facilities, coordinated support, and stronger connections to industry.

This timely and continuous expansion will provide high-quality training, help address workforce gaps in the north, and strengthen opportunities for students and communities alike.

•    Launch of $16.3M Spartan Controls Northwestern Centre for Industrial Automation & Innovation.

Our commitment to regional advancement continues with the establishment of a dedicated skilled trades centre, empowering local students with modern and industry-replicated training environments, strengthening industry pathways, and cultivating the next generation of talent in one of Alberta’s fastest-growing cities. Northern Alberta’s largest post-secondary institution has acquired a 40,000 square foot facility located at 112 Street and 100 Avenue, which will soon become home to a range of in-demand apprenticeship and trades training.
