Micro-credentials Get You Ahead

Northwestern Polytechnic is launching new micro-credentials across a handful of specialties. This fall there will be even more avenues to quickly acquire job-ready skills in Indigenous Health and Mental Wellness, Basic Bookkeeping, Master Electrician and Medical Office Administration.

First introduced at the polytechnic in 2022, micro-credential training allows students to enhance their knowledge and skill set with flexible, short-term training.

“Micro-credentials are gaining popularity due to their ability to deliver an impactful educational outcome for a relatively small investment,” explains Dr. Vanessa Sheane, acting President and CEO. "You can quickly add marketable skills in a few days or over the course of a couple weeks." 

The distinctive NWP offerings vary in length and provide an opportunity for learners to address existing skill gaps or sample a new career pathway. With in-person and blended delivery options available, micro-credentials are designed to be accessible and convenient.

“Micro-credentials can deliver timely skills that benefit both employers and staff,” says Michelle Wallace, Associate Dean of Continuing Education. “They are a perfect solution for those who want to keep pace with industry changes, upskill or explore opportunities for continuous improvement.”

Initial micro-credential courses at NWP have been well received. An Early Learning and Child Care qualification was offered over consecutive weekends in 2022 and has continued to attract interest. 

“After completing the training, students were able to apply for their Level 1 Early Childhood Educator certification and receive a NWP Continuing Education Micro-credential," says Wallace. “As a polytechnic, we are committed to developing skilled graduates who are highly competitive in today’s job market.”

NWP’s micro-credential stream has been developed in partnership with the Alberta government who allocated nearly $400,000 to support the polytechnic’s flexible learning options. Additional micro-credential courses slated for 2024 include Animal Health Care Aide, Bovine Ultrasound, Remotely Operated Aircraft and Electric Vehicle Repair.

“There is a growing understanding that flexible, skills-based training is central to producing an agile workforce,” adds Dr. Sheane. “Developing new skills can help improve retention rates for employers and keep staff ahead of the curve in evolving areas.”
