School of Health Boosting the Healthcare Workforce Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) is committed to developing the next generation of health care leaders.Working together in partnership with the University of Alberta (U of A), we are focused on recruiting, training, and retaining rural medical professionals where they are needed most. Read the Government's Announcement In-Demand Programming On September 2, 2025, NWP and the U of A welcomed the first cohort of medical students to our dedicated regional and residence training centres in Grande Prairie. As part of a Government of Alberta funded strategy to better serve Northern Alberta communities, these medical students will have the opportunity to become diverse, competent, and compassionate physician leaders, right in the heart of the Peace Region. Location Matters NWP is proud of its collaborative medical school programming through the School of Health at the Grande Prairie campus and adjacent Health Education Centre (HEC). The HEC is conveniently co-located within the new Grande Prairie Regional Hospital and is a leading-edge facility that offers 40,000 square feet of teaching, learning, research, and administration space. Recognizing the increasing demand for health care, NWP is also investing in the development of new, purpose-built spaces to meet the learning needs of our future rural health workforce. Our goal is to develop new medical education facilities on campus and within our growing health education district footprint.
