Northwestern Polytechnic Celebrates Opening of New Skilled Trades Training Centre

Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) officially opened its new Skilled Trades Training Centre today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a significant milestone in expanding skilled trades education and workforce development opportunities in northwestern Alberta.

The new 40,000-square-foot facility represents a $29M institutional investment and reflects the Polytechnic’s continued commitment to regional advancement. The facility provides students with modern, industry-aligned training environments designed to support hands-on learning and prepare the next generation of skilled professionals.

“Our enrolment numbers are already confirming what we had heard from local community members, industry leaders, and prospective students about the urgent need for this training in Grande Prairie,” said NWP President and CEO, Dr. Vanessa Sheane. 

“That feedback, along with what the data was clearly showing, gave us the confidence to move forward. I’m immensely grateful to everyone who helped bring this project to fruition at such an important time for our region.”

Located in the heart of industry in Grande Prairie, the Skilled Trades Training Centre brings together specialized training spaces and flexible learning environments that reflect real-world work settings and respond to regional labour market needs.

Through the centralization of skilled trades programming and the establishment of a dedicated training centre, NWP is enhancing access to education, reinforcing industry partnerships, and supporting the region’s growing workforce needs. The new facility expands regional skilled trades training capacity to more than 1,500 seats through coordinated program delivery and increased hands-on training opportunities.

“The new Skilled Trades Training Centre is a great investment in students and in the future of skilled trades training at NWP,” said NWP Students’ Association President, Melly Pack. “This kind of local access to modern equipment and hands-on learning opportunities will give students an edge as they build their skills, gain experience, and prepare to enter the workforce.”

Together with skilled trades programming at NWP’s main campus, the Polytechnic now provides apprenticeship and trades training opportunities in 11 distinctive career pathways including:

• Automotive Service Technician
• Carpenter
• Electrician
• Gasfitter
• Heavy Equipment Technician
• Industrial Mechanic
• Instrumentation and Control Technician
• Parts Technician
• Plumber
• Steamfitter-Pipefitter
• Welder

“This is an investment that delivers at a critical time and place for our region,” said Strike Group Regional Manager, Glen Bauer. “Together with industry, NWP is preparing qualified skilled trades graduates for the jobs we need and helping ensure that talent stays right here in the North.”

With the Skilled Trades Training Centre now complete, NWP is turning its attention to the next major Grande Prairie campus addition. The development of the Northern Edge Technology Centre (NETC) has been ongoing since 2025, when the Government of Alberta invested $1M in preliminary planning for the standalone 59,000-square-foot flagship facility.

“The NETC represents the next step in ensuring we have the training capacity required to help bridge critical workforce gaps and retain much-needed talent in the North,” said Dr. Sheane. “It will bring together responsive, applied training in health care diagnostics, engineering and technology disciplines, and skilled trades, building on the investments we’ve already made while creating capacity for more than 600 additional learners annually.”
