Financial Aid

Loan me the Money

A student loan can help you unlock educational and career goals without stretching yourself too thin. This is money that must be paid back after you graduate, but it can help ease the cost of tuition and other school expenses.

Get everything you need to know and more below.

Where to Apply

Where you apply depends on your province/territory of residency. For example, you are considered to be a resident of Alberta if:

  • Alberta is the last province you have lived in for 12 consecutive months without being a full-time post-secondary student or
  • You are attending a school in Alberta and have not lived in any Canadian province for 12 months in a row. In this case, attach a letter to your application to explain your residency situation or
  • You have been out of high school for less than two years and at least one parent is residing in Alberta, or
  • Your spouse/partner meets the residency requirements for an independent student.

Financial Aid

One Application - Multiple Benefits

By filling in just one online application form, you will be assessed for Canada and Alberta Student Loans, as well as other grants and bursaries.

Important Deadlines

Mark your calendars and get ready to act quickly. Most loan applications open in June for studies beginning on or after August 1. Processing times may vary, so it is important to apply early to avoid disappointment.

You must apply to Alberta Student Aid at least 30 days before the end date of your yearly period of studies.

Dont forget! You must apply for funding each academic year.

What to Expect

Depending on your assessment and province of application, you may receive the following key documents:

  • Notice of Assessment - this document outlines how much you will receive for the year
  • Alberta Student Aid Agreement or Canada Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement - these are the legal agreements between you and the loan provider.

Once your application is approved, you will receive an email asking you to log in to your Student Aid account to complete the legal agreement with your loan provider. This step must be completed before any student loans or grants will be dispersed.

If you are approved for student aid from both your province and Canada, there will be two agreements to complete.

An agreement can be expected if you have:

  • been approved for student aid for the first time,
  • had previous student aid and returned to school after a break of two years or more, or
  • had previous student aid from another province.

The agreement terms and conditions outline important details, including how funds may be used, repayment obligations, and calculation of monthly payments.

Your agreement must be received before the end date of your study period. To allow for processing time, complete your agreement at least two weeks before your school year ends. If your agreement is not complete before your end date, funding will be cancelled.

Once you have completed your Alberta Student Aid agreement, a copy will be available in your Student Aid inbox.

Before any funds are released, Northwestern Polytechnic is required to confirm your enrolment with the student loan provider.

Students must be admitted into a program to complete course registration. Log in to your MyNWP account to register for your full-time course load. Remember to register for both the fall and winter terms.

Once this step is completed successfully, NWP can confirm your enrolment with the funding provider, and grant cheques can be mailed to your home address.

Northwestern Polytechnic will request that tuition and fees be directly paid from your loan certificate when we confirm your enrolment. However, we may be unable to request tuition for programs that fall outside of the typical fall or winter academic schedule.

Remember, it is your responsibility to ensure that tuition payment deadlines are met. Please contact our team at any point if you have questions or require assistance.

If it seems like you did not receive enough funding to cover your expenses for the year, you may be able to appeal your loan. Please discuss options with our Financial Aid officers.

It is important to get in touch with your provincial Student Aid Service Centre and/or the National Student Loans Service Centre if you are still a full-time student, but not receiving student aid this year. This will ensure your existing loans remain interest-free status while you are in school.
