Social Media Principles

These guidelines have been developed to help NWP employees use social media thoughtfully. Whether you're posting on behalf of the Polytechnic or using your personal account, these tips are intended to help put your best foot forward when leaving a digital footprint.

In the digital world, professionalism is your compass, guiding interactions and safeguarding your online presence. Follow these basic practices and make a positive online impression as a representative of NWP.

  • Keep personal and professional identities separate.
  • Use a professional account if you wish to engage with the public, alumni, or students online.
  • Do not friend or follow current students or parents from your personal accounts.
  • Communicate in a way that reflects your role as an educator or representative of NWP.

Social media is NWP’s digital front door, so it's essential to make sure it's secure. Protecting it starts with a few simple tips:

  • Review and adjust your privacy settings on all platforms.
  • Avoid sharing personal details (e.g., home address, phone number).
  • Be cautious about what you share, even in closed groups or private chats.

Your online presence is like a digital shadow. Make sure its being cast in the best light with these handy tips:

  • Use tools like Google Alerts to monitor public mentions of your name.
  • Review tags and comments regularly.
  • Remove yourself from inappropriate content and request take-downs when necessary.

The Internet has a long memory, so only share content you're comfortable with everyone seeing.

  • Even with strong privacy settings, your posts can be screenshotted or forwarded.
  • Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want shared with your supervisor or the public.

Promote your ideas the NWP way and help keep our communications consistent and coordinated across platforms. Please share content promoting courses, job postings, events, or institutional initiatives through NWP’s official social media channels rather than creating original posts on personal or department accounts.

Get your message out with 3 simple steps:

  1. Email your request to @email
  2. Include all relevant details (what, when, where, who, why) and any visuals you’d like us to consider.
  3. Once the post is published to official NWP channels, you are encouraged to reshare the official post to your own network.

Social Media Submission Tip Sheet

If an inquiry slides into your personal DM's, direct them to the right place easily by following these steps:

  • Do not respond on behalf of the institution
  • Instead, direct them to our official contact email

Here is a handy response:

“Thanks for your message. Please contact Northwestern Polytechnic through our official email at @email so someone can help you.”

Here are a few additional guardrails for navigating social media safely, professionally, and responsibly:

  • Protect student privacy. Only share student names, photos or shout-outs through approved NWP channels, with the appropriate permissions in place.
  • Keep it professional. Avoid profanity, offensive language or images that could reflect poorly on you or NWP.
  • Pause before posting about work. Even anonymous posts about workplace frustrations can be linked back to you.
  • Keep confidential information private. Don’t share confidential, proprietary or employment-related information.
  • Connect thoughtfully. Be cautious about accepting connection requests or messages from people you don’t know.
  • Choose your communities carefully. Be mindful of the groups and online communities you join and how they may be perceived professionally.
  • Respect copyright. Make sure you have permission to share content created by others, and provide proper attribution where required.
