Breadcrumb About News NWP and Northern Gateway Working Together to Train More Teachers for Local Classrooms Posted 14 September, 2026 NWP News Share File Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) and Northern Gateway Public Schools (NGPS) have signed a new Letter of Understanding to support a remote cohort of students in NWP’s Bachelor of Education – Elementary program for the 2026-27 academic year. Launched earlier this month, the collaboration gives local students greater access to an NWP teaching degree, helping attract, train and retain talented educators in northern communities. NWP will deliver a combination of in-person and remote courses through Northern Gateway Public Schools facilities, with students receiving support throughout their studies and completing practicum placements in local Northern Gateway elementary school classrooms. “We are proud to work with Northern Gateway Public Schools to create new opportunities in the North,” says Dr. Jodi Schultz, NWP Vice-President Academic. “By bringing together post-secondary education and classroom experience, we can support aspiring teachers while responding to an important workforce challenge in our region.” Rural school communities continue to face challenges recruiting and retaining teachers, making locally accessible education pathways particularly important. “Northwestern Polytechnic has helped transform that vision into reality. As a steadfast partner, NWP has worked alongside us to create a teacher preparation program that combines rigorous academic learning with the practical wisdom gained through on-the-job experience,” says Kevin Bird, NGPS Superintendent. “Together, we are building a sustainable pathway to ensure Northern Gateway students benefit from passionate, highly skilled teachers who are trained locally and invested in the communities they serve.” The Bachelor of Education – Elementary degree prepares graduates to teach kindergarten through Grade 6.
