Northwestern Polytechnic Honours Outstanding Alumni & Community Members at the 38th Annual President's Ball

Northwestern Polytechnic proudly recognized two outstanding individuals at the 38th annual President’s Ball, held October 18 at the TARA Centre – Evergreen Park. The evening celebrated leadership, community, and education with the presentation of the 2025 Community & Alumni Awards.

“This year’s recipients remind us of the powerful impact that education and service can have across generations,” said Dr. Vanessa Sheane, President and CEO of Northwestern Polytechnic. 

“Their stories are inspiring examples of leadership in action - grounded in mentorship, advocacy, and a deep commitment to community.”

Sheila Moerkoert, a proud Métis woman originally from the Northwest Territories, was awarded the Indigenous Community Impact Award for her leadership in student support, cultural advocacy, and youth outreach. From her early career at GPRC to her role at the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre, Sheila has helped countless Indigenous students find connection, identity, and a path through post-secondary education. Her coordination of events such as the Spirit Seekers Youth Conference and Oskayak Summit continues to inspire youth and build strong cultural ties across the region.

Kim Gravengard received the Alumni Leadership Award for her continued leadership in sport, education, and community development throughout the Peace Region. A former Wolves athlete and proud alumna, Kim continues to give back through coaching, mentorship, and long-standing community service. She has supported post-secondary students through bursaries and volunteer involvement, while remaining a strong advocate for youth empowerment and grassroots sport. Her ability to foster connection, uplift others, and stay actively engaged with both NWP and the wider community reflects the spirit of alumni leadership in action, and the lasting influence of those who lead by doing.

These awards recognize individuals whose work continues to make a difference - within NWP and throughout our region. Their leadership, mentorship, and community involvement strengthen the connections that support students, shape opportunities, and build a stronger future for the northwest.
