This course introduces students to the legal, political, and economic contexts and challenges of practicing in rural and northern settings. Theories, concepts and policies applicable to the more generalist nature of social work practice in rural and northern communities will be examined.

This course provides foundational skills for students in conducting social work research with an emphasis on concepts, methodologies, and critical assessment. The course prepares students to engage with policy and research processes that promote equity, accessibility, and social justice in collaboration with marginalized and equity-deserving communities. Students will also reflect on subjectivity, ethics, and the power dynamics involved in policy and research and how that shapes their practice.

This course is an introduction to the processes and dynamics of group and families social work practice. Students will examine the group development process, including the stages, types, and theories of social work related to groups. Students will also explore the theories and skills related to working with diverse families and the role of the social worker.

This course introduces key social work theories and frameworks, including systems, biopsychosocial, structural, and strengths-based approaches among others. Students will explore how these theories inform assessment and intervention across diverse settings. Through critical reflection and case studies, students will also develop their own personalized framework of practice, integrating theory with real-world application to enhance their effectiveness in working with individuals, families, and communities.

This second field experience serves as a capstone course for the social work diploma, allowing students to apply their second year learning to direct social work practice. Students will further develop their practical skills and intervention strategies while working under the supervision of practicing social workers. A seminar component will facilitate student reflection upon their developing professional identity as social workers and how the values, knowledge, and skills they have taken in their courses are applied to professional practice.

This course develops knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for educational assistants to perform their roles and responsibilities as members of an instructional team. Students are equipped to function effectively and professionally in a wide variety of educational settings from kindergarten through senior high school. Students will have the opportunity to integrate the skills and knowledge learned in their courses with practical experience in classroom environments.
Note: Students are responsible for securing a placement to complete the 45 hour practicum component in a school environment.

This course explores basic and therapeutic communication skills for the health professional. Communication skills required for the development of caring relationships and to overcome barriers will be discussed, as well as the skills needed for interprofessional practice, group and family communication. Health teaching in individual and group settings is an important component of this course.

This course introduces the field of women's studies, with emphasis on the theoretical foundations of feminist analysis and the diversity of debates within feminism. The primary focus surrounds issues of gender as a social, cultural and political construct and how this intersects with, for example, race, class and sexuality. The course is also an opportunity to explore the shared and diverse aspects of women's experiences and show how women's studies as an academic discipline challenges the methods, theories and knowledge of traditional disciplines.
