Below, you will find practical advice on maintaining a safe environment, choosing the right footwear, and staying vigilant in various settings. Slips, Trips, and Falls Poor traction, lost balance, or unanticipated obstacles are just a few of the precursors for slips, trips, and falls. Follow these tips to avoid the number one reason for injuries in all work-related sectors. Walk the Talk Travel slowly and carefully on wet or icy walkways and parking lots. Focus on where you are heading, and take short, deliberate steps with the body weight centered over the feet. Watch for and promptly report icy sidewalks/parking lots, missing entry mats, spills, and more to Security Services or Facilities, Maintenance, and Operations. Take responsibility: REMOVE or REPORT hazards in your path. Keep Your Eyes Peeled Read and obey caution or warning signs. Report any burned-out bulbs or inadequate lighting. Watch out for floors or furniture that are uneven or damaged. Dress the Part Wear sturdy shoes that are appropriate for work/weather conditions. Avoid baggy or loose pants that may catch you up. Follow Best Practice Use equipment according to manufacturer’s specifications and safe work procedures. Adopt the 3-point contact method - use your hands and feet (2 and 1) at all times for support when climbing up/down ladders or when entering/exiting vehicles. Keep Calm and Carry On When lifting and handling loads, pre-plan your route. Do not carry more than you can safely manage, and avoid obscuring vision with stacked items. Stay Connected While Working Alone While patrolling campus, Security will check in on staff and students who are working alone outside of regular business hours.All you have to do is contact Security and share the following details: Name Location Estimated time of departure Contact number Housing Safety Keep your home away from home safe and secure with a few simple tips. Stay Connected Know the location of the Blue Security Phones outside the housing office and in the parking lots around the Grande Prairie campus. In Fairview, familiarize yourself with Campus Security and emergency phone numbers. Secure the Perimeter Do not inadvertently give access to strangers. Avoid propping doors open. Do not lend your keys out. Report any lost or stolen keys immediately to the Housing Office or Campus Security and notify the Residence Manager or Campus Security / Facilities and Maintenance Office if you encounter suspicious people in the area. Trust Your Instincts If you feel uncomfortable with unwanted people in your suite, please ask them to leave. If they refuse, contact the Residence Manager or Campus Security. If you think someone is following you, return to your dorm or to a place where others are present. Avoid walking in unlit areas in the evening, and stay out in the open as much as possible. Call Campus Security or 911 for emergencies. Be Theft Aware Do not leave wallets, jewellery, cash, or valuables in your vehicle. When in dorms, avoid leaving your valuables out in the open; lock them away in a secure locker or safe box. Reach out for Help If you hear anything out of the ordinary (e.g. screams, arguments, and domestic disputes), do not intervene. Instead, contact Campus Security right away. If you are at Fairview Campus, you can also contact the Facilities and Maintenance Department, or if this is an emergency, call the RCMP / 911. Buddy up If you are at the Grande Prairie Campus and need to return to your residence or from your residence to your vehicle but feel unsafe, Campus Security will escort you there.
