They may be the first to arrive on scene, they may be the only provider in remote areas, or they may work collaboratively in a team with other EMS/health care providers, first responders (i.e. Fire, Police) or community support agencies. Duties vary depending on the employment setting but responsibilities for PCPs include patient assessment, treatment, stabilization, and transportation. Paramedic Foundations I EM1020 The student will apply new theory, incorporate practical skills, history, assessment, clinical presentation, and diagnostic findings of the ill or injured patient to determine a provisional diagnosis utilizing differential diagnoses and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Students will integrate all knowledge and skills to manage calls for the delivery of safe patient care and promote optimal outcomes. Integration of all these components is critical to address the multiple medical and traumatic conditions encountered in the field. The student will demonstrate proficiency in the application of all competencies in a Skills, Scenario, and Simulation environment. All Course Information Ambulance Placement EM1800 The Ambulance Placement Course is designed to provide the student opportunities to integrate knowledge and skills to provide care for diverse patients across the lifespan in an ambulance setting. Under the guidance of a preceptor, students apply the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom to real emergency situations. The overall outcome of the ambulance placement is for the student to meet all entry to practice PCP competencies. Students are assigned to a Registered PCP or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) for the duration of their placement and will only perform skills under direct and indirect supervision. While on placement, the student acts as a role model for the profession and ambassador for Northwestern Polytechnic, while integrating the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice into their professional practice. The student will maintain the highest level of professionalism throughout the placement while integrating leadership, delegation, history, assessments, clinical presentations, and diagnostic findings into the development of a treatment plan based on a provisional diagnosis. All Course Information Professional Paramedics EM2500 Paramedics work as team members in highly stressful environments with other first responders and health care professionals. As a team member, paramedics require strong professional, communication, collaboration, mentorship, self-reflective, and leadership abilities. Providing safe and competent care to patients and their families requires understanding the importance of research and evidence-based practice. Paramedic practice is guided by a Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, legislative/regulatory requirements, and the ability to maintain physical/mental health and injury prevention. Paramedic practice also requires the practitioner to recognize the value of continuous quality improvement, risk management, and continuing competency processes. This course will discuss these concepts and provide learners with the resources and support to practice as a professional paramedic.
