Researchers are encouraged to review the following policies to support ethical, high-quality research practices.

Start Reviewing

NWP’s Ethics Board is responsible for reviewing applications for research involving human subjects.

NWP’s Animal Care Committee (ACC) is responsible for overseeing the use and treatment of animals used in teaching and research at our institution.

Predatory journals and conferences are increasingly common and can damage your academic credibility. These organizations often charge high fees without offering legitimate peer review, editing, or professional recognition. Publishing with or attending one can impact not only your career, but also the reputation of Northwestern Polytechnic.

Knowing how to spot warning signs is essential. Use the tips below to help determine legitimacy, and when in doubt, reach out for advice.

Predatory Journals

Predatory journals often charge high publication fees but lack editorial standards, peer review, and professional archiving. Ask yourself:

  • Are the articles well-written, properly researched, and free of obvious errors?
  • Does the publisher have a clear, specific mandate?
  • Do editorial board members have credible academic affiliations and current contact information?
  • Are publication fees clearly explained and transparent?

Predatory Conferences

Predatory conferences often send unsolicited invitations, host multiple unrelated events at the same time and venue, and lack rigorous peer review. Before committing:

  • Have colleagues attended and recommended the conference?
  • Is the hosting institution recognized and reputable?
  • Are keynote speakers credible, and are their institutions well-known?
