Women's Hockey

Kelly McLeod joins the NWP Women’s Hockey coaching staff with over 15 years of coaching experience, predominantly dedicated to the advancement of female hockey. A Grande Prairie native, Kelly has been a fixture in the local hockey community as a player, coach, and program builder, including 12 years of service on the Peace Country Female Athletic Club board. His coaching philosophy is centred on the overall development of the athlete, prioritizing increased hockey IQ, skill, creativity, and building player confidence. Above all, Kelly is committed to fostering a team culture where it is "cool" to work hard, compete together as a group, and continuously grow our passion for the game.

With a playing background across the Junior A, College, and U SPORTS levels, Kelly has a first-hand perspective on the demands of balancing high-performance athletics with post-secondary education. On the bench, Kelly is known for his calm demeanour and his ability to bridge individual skill development with team tactics. He believes that consistent communication is the cornerstone of a successful program, allowing the coaching staff to build strong relationships that help athletes perform at their best.

Kelly’s commitment to women’s sports is mirrored in his personal life; he is supported by his wife and three daughters, who are active as high-level athletes in NCAA Division I hockey, competitive volleyball, and U18 AAA hockey. As he steps into this role for the inaugural 2026-2027 season, Kelly aims to help build a competitive, resilient program that the Peace Region and Northwestern Polytechnic will be proud of for years to come.

Originally from Charlottetown, PEI, Dave has called Grande Prairie home for more than 10 years. He relocated to continue his hockey career, leading the Hockey Alberta Regional Centre and building on more than 25 years of experience as a hockey trainer.

Throughout his career, Dave has worked at the Junior A, Major Junior, and U Sports levels in both men’s and women’s hockey. He currently serves as Head Trainer for Hockey Alberta, where he works with both male and female athletes.

Dave lives in Grande Prairie with his wife, Danielle, their sons, Maverick and Jhett, and their labradoodle, Martha. Outside of hockey, you can find him golfing or travelling the world.

Tanya Chomyc brings over a decade of experience developing athletes at every level of the game. As the owner of Power Plus Hockey, Tanya has helped athletes of all ages and skill levels build stronger skating foundations, increase confidence, and reach their full potential.

A Grande Prairie native, Tanya played U18 AAA with the Female Storm before captaining the University of Calgary Dinos to a U Sports National Championship in 2012. She holds a Bachelor of Kinesiology, majoring in Mind Sciences, and currently serves as the Director of Hockey Operations for Peace Country Female Athletic Club (PCFAC). Tanya is also the Skating Coach for the Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL) and was invited to the Toronto Maple Leafs Development Camp as a guest skating consultant in 2025.

Tanya is excited to work with the Wolves and looks forward to helping athletes grow both on and off the ice by building confident, efficient skaters through purposeful development and a passion for the game.

By profession, Trevor Whitby has been an educator within the Grande Prairie Public School Division for 29 years, a career that deeply informs his coaching style. His experience in the classroom translates directly to the ice, where he excels in structuring development plans, fostering a positive learning environment, and connecting with student-athletes on an individual level.

• Goaltender Specialization: Coach Whitby focuses on translating complex technical and tactical aspects of the position into understandable and implementable skills. He emphasizes mental resilience and confidence-building, ensuring goalies are prepared for the high-pressure environment of collegiate competition.
• Integrated Development: Drawing on over two decades of experience in player development and coaching, Coach Whitby understands the balance required for student-athletes to succeed academically and athletically.
• Program Building: As part of the Wolves' founding staff, Coach Whitby plays a key role in recruiting and mentoring the first cohort of players. His educational background is a valuable asset in establishing a team culture that prioritizes athletic and academic excellence, as well as positive personal growth.
