The Department of Fine Arts serves as an excellent launching pad for students pursuing careers in the visual arts. Under the instruction of passionate and talented artists, students can expect a balanced blend of hands-on studio experiences and lecture-based courses. 

Our carefully designed curriculum prepares students for advanced studies at universities or art institutes. Upon completing their studies at Northwestern Polytechnic, students can receive up to 60 transfer credits toward their university degree, facilitating a smooth transition into higher education in the fine arts.

To be considered for admission, you must meet specific criteria, including English language proficiency and an overall average of 60 per cent in the following courses or equivalents:

  • English 30-1, minimum 60 percent
  • Three from Group A or C
  • One from Group A, B, or C

A studio and lecture-based course with emphasis on the foundational principles and elements of 2D composition and design, including an introduction to colour theory. Students will be guided through the exploration of a variety of 2D mediums, materials, and processes, including safe handling protocols.

An introductory level studio course that will introduce you to a variety of techniques and materials pertinent to sculpture. This course will stress basic design, concept and material relationships.

This course provides an introduction to the principles and techniques of studio painting. This is a two-term course offered over fall/winter terms. It is identifiable in the Schedule of Courses (Timetable) with a Part A and a Part B. Students must register in both the Part A and the Part B of all types of sections offered (sections, labs, seminars, etc.) for this course.

The course adopts a global perspective, examining art from prehistory through to the 15th century. It is not an exhaustive survey but focuses on major developments in art through case studies from past cultures and communities in diverse global regions. These case studies enable the exploration of examples from both non-Western and Western traditions. The course aims to enhance understanding and appreciation of visual art and art history methodologies, providing students with a foundational knowledge of art history and its pivotal moments.
