The EMR Program offers a comprehensive curriculum that blends flexible online learning with immersive, hands-on experiences. Participants complete three 45-hour courses online, complemented by 164 hours of onsite EMR skill labs, 40 hours of Emergency Vehicle Operations Training, and a 16-hour Patient Engagement opportunity. 

The program’s core features include dynamic online lectures and mandatory in-person labs at the NWP Health Education Centre, with off-site options approved by ACP. Through practical assessments and scenario-based activities, students develop essential skills and earn certifications.

To be considered for admission, you must meet specific criteria, including English language proficiency and the following courses or equivalents:

  • Biology 30 minimum 60%
  • English Language Arts 30-1 minimum 60% or English Language Arts 30-2 minimum 70%
  • Math 20-1 minimum 50% or Math 20-2 minimum 60%

A comprehensive exploration of both theoretical principles and practical applications crucial for delivering effective patient care. This course employs a hybrid approach, combining online learning modules with in-person instruction and patient engagement to provide students with a rounded understanding of medical theory, practical skills, assessment techniques, clinical presentations, and diagnostics pertinent to the management of ill and injured patients.

The course emphasizes active application of acquired theoretical knowledge through participation in skills, scenarios, and simulation environments. Through simulated patient care scenarios, and patient engagement students refine their ability to handle emergency calls efficiently, administer safe patient care, and navigate medical and trauma situations with assuredness.

Within this course is a 16-hour Patient Engagement which offers hands-on experience for Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) students, focusing on assessment, communication, and interpersonal skills essential for professional practice. Under the guidance of an assigned instructor/preceptor, students will practice and refine skills in a supervised environment. Throughout the patient engagement, students will uphold the standards of the profession and represent Northwestern Polytechnic with integrity. They will integrate the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice into their professional conduct, while incorporating communication, history-taking, assessment techniques, clinical presentations, and diagnostic findings.

This blended approach equips students with the skills, confidence, and expertise necessary to respond effectively to the complexities of emergency medical situations.

Paramedics work as team members in highly stressful environments with other first responders and health care professionals. As a team member, paramedics require strong professional, communication, collaboration, mentorship, self-reflective, and leadership abilities. Providing safe and competent care to patients and their families requires understanding the importance of research and evidence-based practice. Paramedic practice is guided by a Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, legislative/regulatory requirements, and the ability to maintain physical/mental health and injury prevention. Paramedic practice also requires the practitioner to recognize the value of continuous quality improvement, risk management, and continuing competency processes. This course will discuss these concepts and provide learners with the resources and support to practice as a professional paramedic.
