Temporary Part Time Weekend Cook
About Us The Elder’s Caring Shelter vision is that all homeless and at-risk elders have access to safe, affordable, and accessible shelter. The mandate is to manage and sustain a fully accessible 18 bed facility that will meet the emergency and transitional needs of homeless and at-risk individuals.
The philosophy of the Elder’s Caring Shelter is to assist individuals to move towards self-reliance and self-sufficiency. The focus involves an integrated, culturally sensitive, coordinated community approach to address the underlying causes of homelessness.
Rate of Pay: $22.00 hour
Days of Work: Saturday and Sunday
Number of Paid Hours Per Day: 7
Weekly Total Hours: 14
Qualifications
• Food Handler Certification
• WHIMIS
• Criminal Record Check
• One year cooking experience
• Reliable and dependable
• Must be able to work independently without supervision
• Previous experience working with seniors is considered an asset
Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Adhere to food safety laws at all times
• Monitor and record fridge, freezer, and oven temperatures
• Calibrate thermometers and record all food temperatures
• Record water temperatures daily • Daily monitoring of the fridge for food that is expired.
• Ensure the dry food storage areas meet the safe food storage standards.
• Ensure high touch areas, counters, water taps, handles are sanitized frequently throughout the shift.
• Keep a clean kitchen at all times.
• Prevent cross contamination at all times in cleaning/sanitizing, employee practices, storage, preparation areas, equipment, and utensils
• Plan for safely defrosting meat in refrigerator
• Ensuring dishwashing meets food regulation and Public Health standards
• Serve Brunch promptly at 12:00PM (noon), and Dinner at 5:00PM on the weekends
• Follow preplanned meal schedule, including providing low sodium, and diabetic friendly options for specific dietary requirements
• Ability to follow recipes
• Utilize in house ingredients for cooking and baking
• Ability to make homemade gravy, sauces, and soups
• Various baking skills: such as cookies, cakes, cinnamon buns, muffins, desserts, bread, and Bannock
• Prep ingredients for meals and snacks: salads, fruits, and vegetables
• Complete daily kitchen chore list
• Report emergencies or incidences regarding residents to management and/or security
• Must be able to prioritize, problem solve, and plan work activities to use time efficiently
