This capstone apprenticeship course requires students to apply their advanced IT knowledge in a professional setting, undertaking significant projects under industry supervision to demonstrate mastery of program competencies. Students will complete this immersive industry apprenticeship placement to showcase their ability to execute complex IT projects and integrate skills acquired throughout the program in a real-world environment.

Design History provides students with an understanding of the history of design and how it is intertwined with cultural histories. This course introduces students to practices and principles of design that evolved over time to create the context for design as a contemporary practice. This course is lecture-based and requires students to conduct research as well as writing.

An introduction to the principles, practices and history of Typography. Students will gain an understanding of typographic terminology, typeface classifications and the importance of type in visual communication. Projects in this course emphasize an analogue approach to 2D organization, design, and creation.

Visual Communication is designed for students to develop visual literacy and critical skills when responding to diverse forms of media. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this course includes the study of cinema, photography, visual art, performance, print, as well as digital formats. Students engage in a series of written and oral assignments in response to diverse forms of mediated communication. Visual Communication is a foundational course to learn transferable skills required for both academic and professional settings. These skills include writing, ethical research, oral presentations, AI integration, as well as increasing competency in describing and discussing visual media.

This course further explores principles and practices of Typography with an emphasis on digital design. Students will study the significant influence of type with particular emphasis on contemporary and emerging approaches. Utilizing skills from Typography I, students create digital projects intended for print media.

This course provides an in-depth engagement with colour theory through studio-based practices as it relates to graphic design. Students engage in projects that broaden their understanding of the cultural and aesthetic implications of colour.

This course builds on Digital Design I, expanding students’ knowledge of design software platforms. Projects will focus on integrating a broader engagement with design contexts and contemporary trends, including the integration of AI in the design process.

This course focuses on user and audience interactivity with digital interfaces. Through a combination of projects and lectures, students will gain an understanding of how to apply various research and assessment strategies to interactivity with users and audiences. Interactive Design involves research, prototypes and usability assessments as students consider how an audience and context relate to their design approaches.

In this course, students will develop their knowledge of Indigenous peoples’ histories, educational experiences and knowledge systems, and will further develop their understanding of the significant connections between such knowledge and the professional roles and obligations of teachers. Students will develop knowledge and skills in evidence-informed instructional strategies, inclusive classrooms, and trauma-informed approaches. This course will explore foundational concepts and theories central to effective instruction in K-6 social studies classrooms. This course aims to introduce students’ understanding of pedagogical approaches for presenting historical and contemporary principles, ideas, and knowledge within meaningful contexts, with a focus on culturally responsive teaching to better plan, prepare and teach students in an elementary social studies context.
