Apprenticeship programs are the perfect way to jump-start your career if you have a connection to an employer
and knowledge or experience in an area of the skilled trades. Your training will consist of classroom time
and on-the-job training, which allows you to learn and earn while you power up your path to becoming a
To become an apprentice, you must be at least 16 years old and meet the minimum educational requirements for
your trade. Typically apprentices train for four years and then write provincial examinations set by
industry and the Government of Alberta. Once you successfully complete your apprenticeship, you will be
certified by the Province as a qualified tradesperson or journeyperson. Upon completion of the program, you
may also write interprovincial exams to obtain Red Seal status.
