Health Care Aide Graduate 22/23
"When I made the choice to go back to school to further my role in health care, I had no idea how I was going to make this happen. I knew I could work as a housekeeper, but my concern was how late I would have to work and how well could I focus on my studies if I'm required to work long hours?
As much as I calculated and considered many jobs, before and after school, I knew I also needed to focus attention on my studies. This was my shot to do something I always dreamed of doing. And that dream is to be an integral part of the health care team.
I went to the Financial Aid office at Northwestern Polytechnic, and I explained my situation and simply asked what does a person like me do in this case? Is it really a choice between the best marks ever, a paid bill, or a healthy, nutritious lunch?
I attended a drop-in session provided by the Financial Aid office that promotes the awards specific to Indigenous students. It was there that I learned of the many awards that Northwestern Polytechnic had to offer, both internal and external. I was given the tools I needed to apply for the awards from the helpful staff.
When I was selected as one of the recipients of the Indigenous Careers Award, I had a weight taken off of my shoulders. I was able to pay my monthly bills and provide myself with basic things like groceries.
Because of the generosity of the donors, my time was free to focus on my studies, and as a result, I excelled at my program and graduated successfully from Northwestern Polytechnic. The awards available are made possible to help us as students to have success, and I'm very thankful I was one of them!"
