Upholding Standards The Research Ethics Board (REB) is responsible for human subject Research Ethics Reviews, and meets quarterly in January, April, August and November and will review applications for ethics approval at that time. Institutions shall establish or appoint REB(s) to review the ethical acceptability of all research involving humans conducted within their jurisdiction or under their auspices, that is, by their faculty, staff or students, regardless of where the research is conducted, in accordance with this Policy [Article 6.1 TCPS2]. Reporting Structure Reports to Academic Council Composition At least two (2) members have expertise in relevant research disciplines, fields and methodologies covered by the REB At least one (1) member is knowledgeable in ethics At least one (1) member is knowledgeable in the relevant law (but that member should not be the institution’s legal counsel or risk manager). This is mandatory for biomedical research and is advisable, but not mandatory for other areas of research At least one (1) community member who has no affiliation with the institution. NOTE 1: It is advisable that each member be appointed to formally fulfill the requirements of only one of the above categories. NOTE 2: To ensure the independence of REB decision making, institutional senior administrators shall not serve on the REB. Chairperson The Chair must be a faculty member from our institution. The Chair will provide overall leadership for the REB and to facilitate the REB review process, based on institutional policies and procedures and this Policy. Human subject research is guided by the Research and Ethics Policy: Research Involving Humans. Anyone planning to conduct research involving human subjects must read and understand this policy. To file an Application for Ethics Approval for Human Subject Ethics to the Research Ethics Board, please complete and forward it to the Office of Applied Research at @email. The Research Ethics Board meets quarterly in January, April, August and November and will review applications for ethics approval at that time.
